For more than three decades Xikang Lai has looked for the moment a body holds still without losing its motion. He studied sculpture at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, which holds his graduation work Civilized Ruins (1990), and has taught in Guangzhou ever since — first at a vocational school, then as a visiting lecturer and professor. His studio works move between dancers, yogis and turning figures in bronze, cupronickel and marble; his public commissions stand in parks, schools and memorial halls. Since 2022 the Gate series has carried the same search into geometry. He is a member of the Guangdong Artists Association.三十多年來，賴錫康一直在尋找那個身體靜止、卻不失動勢的瞬間。他畢業於廣州美術學院雕塑系，畢業作品《廢墟》（1990）現藏學院；此後一直在廣州任教——先在職業中學，後任多所院校客座講師及教授。他的架上作品在舞者、瑜伽與迴轉的人體之間往返，以青銅、白銅與漢白玉塑造；公共作品則立於公園、學校與紀念館。自2022年起，「門系列」把這份追尋帶入幾何。廣東省美術家協會會員。

“I inherit tradition, and within limits I overturn it. My work takes up figures and themes: from historical figures I try to draw out the spirit particular to each, and through the shaping of form to make a particular beauty. From literature I take nourishment, trying to turn ordinary things into something extraordinary and to build a bridge from appearance to the inner life — a poetic image. I hold to the beauty all people share and try to dig deeper for it, however disheartening what we see today may be. To begin from a traditional sense of beauty and give it modern value is extremely hard, but I am willing to try, hoping that through craft I can find, from more angles, what is able to move people. As the Polish poet Adam Zagajewski said: try to praise the mutilated world.”

“Lai’s studio sculpture speaks above all in a figurative, lyrical language; he is especially gifted at holding a graceful instant of the body still as an image to be contemplated. In his work, bending and stretching, leaning and balance, strength and softness, tension and release arise naturally in form and in meaning, setting one another off and flowing together. Representative works such as The Beauty of Curved Stretching, Balance and Shi show a reflective understanding of the body’s beauty and a mature command of space. His apt choice of materials and refined craft lift the works further still.”
